  7. SHARP

Sharp offers a wide range of TV’s with excellent picture quality and immersive sound. Their 4K and FHD TVs offer up-to-the-minute smart technology in a range of sizes

  8. HISENSE

Hisense 43/55/65" UHD Series 6 Android Smart 4K TV

Hisense TVs undercut rivals while offering similar specs and stylish designs, making them an attractive prospect for anyone looking for a high-end TV without a matching price. A big chunk of the market in Uganda is taken up by budget TVs offered by Hisense.

The different types of TVs explained: OLED vs. LED vs. LCD

Major TVs typically come in three varieties: OLED, LED, or LCD. OLED allows for smooth and colorful images with great contrast. In an OLED, each individual pixel self-illuminates, so you can control images at a pixel level. LED and backlit LCDs can be cheaper, but require an external source of light which increases the components so are chances of the TV breaking down or needing repair. There’s also QLED, which is just an LED with a brighter screen. OLED TVs are our top choice, but they don’t come cheap. If you cannot get an OLED, your next best bet would be an LED TV, followed by an LCD.

How much should I spend?

While LG, Samsung, and Sony all make superb high-end sets, their budget and midrange sets are often outshined by up-and-comer TCL and Hisense, which offers relative quality at a great price. Larger TVs are typically more expensive, and stepping down to a 55- or 50-inch model will bring the price down.

Best TV features to look for

Resolution:

This is the number of pixels on the screen. More pixels mean more details. Anything above 4K is aptly referred to as Ultra HD. With Ultra HD sets, you also get High Dynamic Range (HDR), which allows for better contrast with a wider array of colors. That’s why you shouldn’t buy a TV with less than 4K resolution.

Screen size:

You can sit twice as close to a 4K UHD TV thanks to better resolution, so pick the largest size that will fit in your space and budget.

Smart TVs:

Today, most TVs are smart, meaning they are WiFi connected and have built-in apps like Netflix and YouTube. Many TV brands offer their own unique platform, while some work with third parties like Roku to develop the interface. When shopping, if you like the TV but not the smart interface, you can always augment it with a relatively inexpensive media box.

How to Check Whether Your New TV Is Genuine

There are a number of very cheap LCD & LED TVs that have appeared on the market. Some of these TVs are branded with household names such as Samsung, Sony, LG or Panasonic.

With prices as low as 500,000 UGX to 700,000 UGX, for a 32 inch SONY LED TV, one has to wonder whether some of these TVs are original.

Here is a list of the features that you can check to verify if a TV is original even before purchasing it.

How to check if your Samsung TV is genuine.

  1. Check the Logo: Check the logo found on the TV. Counterfeit products will have a slightly modified logo from the original.
  2. Check the Warranty Card: Warranty cards should be provided along with the TV. These will also have further information such as contact information
  3. Call Customer Support: You can call the toll free number on the warranty card to confirm if the model number and serial number are valid.
  4. Check TV User Interface (UI): Click on the Menu > Support > Contact Samsung. Furthermore, for an original smart tv, the software should be able to update. So you can try to update the tv software to check if it is original.
  5. Verify the Resolution: Verify that the resolution of the TV is as advertised on the packaging. You can verify the resolution by connecting the TV to a computer with an HDMI or VGA cable.

A genuine 4K TV will have a resolution of 3840 x 2160. An original Samsung TV will also have a very clear picture quality.

Other points to check

The location of the serial number of the TV

Newer Samsung TVs have their serial number and model number located on the right side of the TV. Older versions will have their serial number and model number on the back of the TV.

Smart TVs also provide the serial number and model number from the user interface, when a user navigates to Menu > Support > Contact Samsung.

The serial numbers on the TV must also match with the serial numbers that may be found on the packaging box that came with the TV.

Register the TV online with the manufacturer

You can register your Samsung TV online after you have purchased it. The registration process will confirm if the serial number and model number of the TV are valid. This can help you to verify whether the TV is genuine or not.

Top Brands Of Washers & Dryers: Buyer’s Guide

Whirlpool 8kg Integrated Washing Machine

It’s no secret that a washing machine can be an expensive purchase. A good number of washing machines differ in terms of features, capacity and load and function. These also have unique features such as quick wash, wash programs, protective rat mesh, child lock, hot wash/temperature control, digital display and so on. Our experts guide us on front loaders, top loaders, key features, energy use and other essential info.

Types of washing machines

Fully-automatic or semi-automatic

Washing machines come in two variants – fully-automatic, which does everything for you at the touch of a button, and semi-automatic, which can come with two tubs. If you use a twin tub semi-automatic washing machine, this means you may need to move your clothes from one tub to the other during the washing process. These machines can also use less water and allow you to pause between cycles. However, if you’re after a convenient wash, a fully-automatic washing machine will do everything for you. Fully-automatic washing machines come in two types i.e. front loading or top loading.

1. Front loading washing machines

Clothes are loaded from the front side as its drum sits horizontally.

Positives
  • Gentler on clothes
  • More water-efficient
  • Comparatively better wash cycle
  • Use less detergent
  • More programs and higher temperature options
  • Cheaper to run
  • Higher spin speeds, which means faster drying (and cheaper if you use a clothes dryer)
  • Best for small spaces – you can fit most under a bench or put a dryer on or above it
Negatives
  • Longer wash cycles – over three hours in some cases
  • Difficult or impossible to retrieve keys, phones or other items left in pockets mid-cycle
  • Generally more expensive to buy
  • You often can’t add to the wash load after the cycle has started
  • Heavy to move
  • Some need special brackets if placed on a wooden floor
  • Tend to have louder spin cycles
  • Some may rinse poorly due to their low water usage

2. Top loading washing machines

Clothes are loaded from the top side as its tub sits vertically in the machine

Positives
  • Tend to be more reliable than front loaders
  • Smaller and faster washing cycle
  • Generally cost-effective because they are relatively simpler in design and construction
  • Lighter and easier to move
  • Easy to add clothes once a cycle has started
  • Easier to retrieve forgotten items like tissues, keys and phones from pockets mid-cycle
  • Generally better rinse performance
Negatives
  • Rough on clothes
  • Use more water than front loaders
  • Use more energy when washing in warm water
  • Use more washing detergent
  • Cost more to run

What should I look for in a washing machine?

1. Capacity

Do you have a big family? The size of your household and projected laundry loads play a big part in your washing machine requirement. You can get a variety of washing machine sizes, for example, a washing machine with a capacity of 6-7kg should be ideal for a family of four. If there are fewer people in your house, then you may want a smaller machine, and if you’re a bigger family than opt for a larger machine

2. Your space

How much space do you have? If you only have a tight or narrow space in which to install your washing machine, that may factor in your decision when it comes to picking the right machine. For fully-automatic washing machines, a top load machine may be narrower than a front load one, for example.

3. Price

The price of the washing machine is a deciding factor when it comes to finding the right washing machine. Depending on your budget, how much you can pay may also skew you towards certain machines. You can see more about the price ranges in our washing machine buying guide.

4. Cycle time

Top loaders are generally faster than front loaders, partly because front loaders use less water. If you prefer a front loader, look for one with a “fast wash” cycle – but this may not be suitable for very full or heavily soiled loads, no matter how much of a hurry you are in to get the washing on the line. You should also factor in drying time. With a higher spin speed, front loaders extract more water so your drying time can be shorter, saving you money if you also use a dryer.

5. Noise

As a general rule, front loaders are louder and higher pitched than top loaders due to their faster spin speed. If your laundry is close to your living area this can be a big deal, so consider this in your decision

6. Hot and/or cold water connections

Some machines need both hot and cold water to operate correctly, or may need a special connector or a sealing cap for the hot water inlet if you want to connect it to cold water only

7. Child locks

If you live in a house filled with curious children, you may want to buy a washing machine that comes with child lock functions. This can either be on the door or a program that can’t be changed once the machine is going.

8. Features

Various features, like speeds and settings, depend on what you’re looking for in a machine. For some, having too many features can make things confusing. Possible features include fast cycles, specific cycles catering to whites, woolens or delicates. Some ultra-modern machines even have sensors that do things automatically so you don’t have to worry about getting the right program in gear.

Other common features include Auto-sensing water level Delicates, or “Hand wash” programs, Fast wash, Out-of-balance correction, Anti-crease, Selectable spin speed, Extra rinse, Internal water heater, Favorite program, Wi-Fi connectivity, Lint filter

9. Energy / Eco-friendly

Having an economical washing machine is not just good for the environment, but can also help you with the bills. While the cost of the washing machine may initially be higher, you may end up saving on the bills as they can save power or water in the long run, so the long term running costs of the washing machine are much lower than for a washer that’s not eco-friendly.

A good washing machine should be able to;

  • Get your clothes the cleanest
  • Rinse detergents most thoroughly
  • Offer high water and energy efficiency
  • Being gentle on your clothes
  • Offer both hot and cold connections, and
  • Wash the fastest

Choosing The Best Fridge For Your Home: Buyer’s Guide

Whirlpool W Collection Fridge Freezer, WQ9I FO1BX

Whether you are a bachelor or living in a joint family, a refrigerator is one of those most expensive important items to have in your home. But zeroing in on the right one for you is not easy. There are many aspects to consider from the size to door style, energy efficiency, brand, technology (your fridge should last you upwards of 10 years) and price. Today, refrigerators feature a wide variety of new smart features, including the ones that are aimed to give your kitchen a complete makeover by acting as a refrigerator and an entertainment hub.

What size of fridge do I need?

1-2 Members : 250-380L ( We usually recommend larger fridges as they tend to be more energy efficient and cost less in the long run)

3-5 Members : 350-530L

5+ Members : 440L+ ( Add 29L or more for each additional family member, plus freezer space)

Different types of fridges

1. Top mount freezer

They are a great option if price, range, efficiency and value are your biggest concerns. Their downside is that you have to bend down to access the fridge which is the most used compartment.

Positives
  • Low initial cost
  • Low running cost
  • Wide variety on the market
Negatives
  • You have to bend down to access the fridge, which is the most used compartment

2. Bottom mount freezer

They are designed with the freezer on the bottom to bring about convenience and saving you from back pain but they are usually more expensive.

Positives
  • Logical fridge design – what you use most is at eye level
  • The freezer often has handy slide-out baskets
  • Range and variety of bottom mount fridges is growing
Negatives
  • More expensive to buy than top mount fridges
  • Marginally more expensive to run than top mount fridges
  • Can be slower to chill, especially in the freezer

3. Side-by-side (fridge next to freezer)

They come with plenty of space and extra features making them great for entertainers or large families.

Positives
  • Lots of features available, such as ice and water dispensers
  • Good for galley kitchens, thoroughfares or areas where you can’t have a large swinging door
  • Good storage capacity
  • Best access for people in wheelchairs
Negatives
  • Ice makers and water chillers can take up a lot of freezer space
  • Internal space is quite narrow and won’t always fit a pizza box or frozen turkey
  • Large physical form takes up a lot of space and can’t fit in a tight corner
  • Temperatures can be inconsistent between the top and bottom of the fridge

4. French door (bottom mount freezer with a two door fridge)

French door fridges combine the convenience of a bottom mount fridge with good capacity and extra features.

Positives
  • Lots of features available like ice and water dispensers
  • Good storage capacity
  • Both fridge and freezer are wide enough for large platters and bulk foods
  • All the benefits of a bottom mount fridge
Negatives
  • Ice makers and water chillers can take up a lot of fridge space
  • Large physical form takes up a lot of space and can’t fit in a tight corner

5. Pigeon pair (separate, but matching upright fridge and freezer)

A pigeon pair combines plenty of storage capacity with more flexibility when it comes to placement.

Positives
  • Can be kept separate (with the freezer in another part of house like the laundry or garage) which is great for small kitchens
  • Good storage capacity
Negatives
  • Takes up more space overall

What finish should I choose for my fridge?

1. Stainless steel

Stainless steel fridges bring that sleek, professional look to your kitchen but can be prone to showing fingerprints and other marks. Look for matte or ‘fingerprint-resistant’ finishes if you don’t want to be forever buffing away smudges, and expect to pay a little more if you like the stainless look.

Many high end stainless steel fridges offer a completely flat front, whereas most fridge doors are slightly curved. Many of them also aren’t magnetic, which means no more fridge magnets – but then again why would you want to cover up such a beautiful appliance anyway?

2. Classic white

White fridges are easier to keep clean than their stainless steel counterparts, and tend to be a little cheaper to buy, saving you money as well as time spent buffing fingerprints from the finish, and despite the popularity of stainless steel fridges there’s plenty of options available if you want a white one.

3. Bright colours

Retro styled fridges in bright colours are increasingly popular as a statement appliance and combine a vintage look with modern fridge internals, but remember that your fridge is a long-term investment that will probably see several trends come and go. Consider how you’ll feel about it in 10 years’ time, and how it will suit a new kitchen if you move house.

4. Black

Black appliances are back, with several manufacturers offering black, charcoal or dark finish fridges. A black fridge is a modern alternative to a plain white appliance but without the fingerprint showing tendencies of stainless steel, but they can be a little imposing and may make your kitchen itself seem darker.

5. Glass

The latest development in fridge design means eschewing metal altogether and using glass. No, this doesn’t mean a clear window into your fridge, but you will often get a wide range of colours to choose from. Aside from aesthetics, glass won’t show fingerprints quite as readily as a shiny stainless steel fridge, and you may have discreet controls which light up through the glass when in use but are all but invisible when dormant. Glass means the front of your fridge will be perfectly flat, not curved, and your favourite fridge magnets may not stick, but why would you want to cover up such a beautiful appliance anyway?

What does it cost to run a fridge?

More energy stars, more savings

Your fridge contributes up to 8% of your energy bill so choosing an efficient one will save you money. While larger fridges will use more energy overall than smaller ones, the energy star ratings help you compare relative energy efficiency.

The star rating will let you know how your fridge performs based on its size, but the number on the energy rating label gives you the raw figures, which you can use to calculate how much your fridge will cost to run by multiplying it by your current energy cost per Kilowatt hour.

What fridge features do I need?

1. Water and ice dispenser

  • A dispenser located on the outside of the door saves you constantly opening and closing the fridge for cold drinks.
  • Some water and ice dispensers need to be connected to a tap – an additional plumbing installation expense.
  • With others, water can be dispensed from a container inside the door. This convenience has a trade-off though, and dispensers can take up almost 30% of your freezer space.
  • Some water and ice dispensers also require replacement water filters – an additional periodic expense.

2. Crisper

  • A good crisper saves you having to put your fruit and veg in plastic bags. The compartment should be well sealed to keep vegetables fresh.
  • It should also be easy to remove for cleaning.
  • Check that the fridge’s air outlets don’t blow onto it, as this will dry your food out faster.
  • If you store large volumes of fruit and veg, look for a fridge with more than one crisper.
  • Your crisper should be at least 45cm wide to fit celery, leeks and other long vegetables.

3. Door

  • Make sure the handles aren’t too high or too low and that the door opens in the right direction for your kitchen. Some models have reversible doors.
  • Also make sure you can open the fridge doors easily and comfortably. Remember, a display fridge in store that’s not plugged in will be easier to open than a fridge that’s turned on.
  • If you or someone in your household find fridges frustrating then check out our guide to choosing an accessible fridge for people with disabilities, vision impairment or cognitive impairment.

4. Temperature controls

  • Look for two separate temperature controls. A single control sets both the freezer and the fresh food compartment, so you can’t adjust one without affecting the other. Some electronic fridges have better independent controls.
  • Some fridges have a 24-hour memory that monitors door openings and pre-cools the fridge before a period of heavy use – such as when the kids get home from school or you’re preparing dinner.
  • Some fridges automatically manage defrosting to suit conditions.
  • Some fridges let out a warning beep if you leave the door open too long, or forget to close it properly.

5. Shelves

  • Shelves ought to be easy to remove and replace for cleaning or adjustment. Does the range of shelf positions suit your needs? For example, can you stand soft drink or wine bottles in the door shelves? Split shelves can be handy for this.
  • Shelves may be made from moulded plastic or safety glass. Some shelves feature raised lips or other features to help stop spilt milk or other liquids spreading throughout your whole fridge.

6. Rollers and adjustable feet

  • Rollers with brakes or adjustable feet to secure the fridge and stop it from escaping.
  • Adjustable feet to ensure your fridge is level from left to right. The front being slightly elevated from the rear means your door will close more easily, or possibly even on its own if you leave it open.

7. Dairy compartment

  • A slightly warmer area of the fridge, convenient for keeping butter and hard cheeses slightly soft.
  • Lockable storage compartment, great if you need to keep medicines refrigerated but safely out of reach of small children.

8. Chiller (meat compartment)

  • This compartment stores meat, fish and poultry (fresh or cooked) at a safe temperature, keeping it fresher for longer. Chiller temperature should be close to zero and ideally it should have a separate temperature control.

9. Quick-chill zone

  • Located close to the cold-air outlets, this feature is handy for cooling drinks quickly. However, food left there too long may freeze.

10. Child proofing

Choose a child-friendly fridge with safety features such as:

  • water and ice dispensers with child-proof settings
  • a lockable medicine compartment
  • temperature controls with a child lock.

11. Noise

  • Whether or not fridge noise is an issue depends on your kitchen layout, whether it’s open plan, and its proximity to living and sleeping areas.

12. Cleaning

  • Look for smooth, easy to clean surfaces with no awkward corners or dirt-trapping areas.
  • Check how easy it is to remove and replace crisper drawers and shelves for when they require cleaning.

13. Where to put different foods in my new fridge?

An important consideration when setting up a new fridge is where to put things in it. Contrary to what you might think, the temperature will vary across different areas of your fridge, and will be cooler in some parts and warmer in others. You should give consideration to these areas and store different foods in the most appropriate locations, for example, meat goes in the chiller or the coldest part of the fridge, butter goes in the warmer dairy compartment (so it’s easier to spread), and veggies should be stored in the crisper.

Which fridge brand is the most reliable?

Most people expect their new fridge to last at least 10 years, but not all of them do. And with a typical manufacturer’s warranty lasting only about two years, dealing with a faulty fridge can be a serious annoyance.

Best Cooker Brands: Buyer’s Guide

Hisense Built-in Hob, 4 Gas, 60*60cm

No kitchen is complete without an electric cooker. We call them stoves and even hobs. Your cooker is the centerpiece of your kitchen and your home that requires an easy to use oven and model design that will complement your house. You don’t want an annoying oven door or poorly fitted hobs to get in the way of you cooking and having fun in the kitchen.

Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or simply need a new stove, a quality oven is a vital part of any home. You definitely want to shop smart when making a decision about such an expensive kitchen appliance. So, what are the best stove brands? Oven manufacturers include those from major makers of home appliances – like GE, Sharp, Samsung and more. There are also brands that specifically make ovens to consider when deciding on the best new addition to your kitchen. Users looking for a new oven will want to research a variety of different oven brands to find the one that best suits their cooking needs, based on function and features. This list can help! Here, you’ll find a variety of oven brands ranked by user votes.

Gas and electric ovens vary by type. Some are designed to go under a range cook top, while others are counter top models that can be a tight fit in a crowded kitchen with little counter space available. Most of the major oven brands are available in a variety of different styles, each designed to best suit a customers’ specific cooking needs. Oven brands offer varying degrees of cooking power as well. Some models can cook food quickly using higher wattage to get the job done. Others might take a bit longer, but they also work well. What is the best oven company? That’s subjective, and often based on a consumer’s past experiences with a specific brand. How often do you cook? How big is your kitchen? In addition to answering these questions, you want to make sure you’re picking a quality brand. Whether it’s gas or electric, you need a brand with a good reputation if you want an oven that’s going to last.

Before you buy a new cooker

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a new cooker. While most are quick and easy to install, the type of cooker you get will be largely determined by your kitchen’s fuel supply, whether it’s gas, electric or dual fuel with a gas hob and electric oven combined.

Electric models tend to be some of the cheapest appliances around and they offer a simple and streamlined cooking experience. Easy to use and safe to run, electric models compromise of a range of different oven and hob technologies and designs.

What are the different types of hobs?

You can often get three forms of electric hob with these cookers. Solid plate tops are still commonly found on the budget models, and while they are the least energy efficient and take the longest time to heat, they are still reliable options. Ceramic hobs are popular because they are easy to clean and control and they look streamlined. By heating up the ceramic glass surface efficiently, ceramic hobs tend not to waste energy. Taking ceramic hob technology to the next level are induction hobs that only heat up the pans surface thanks to their magnetic technology. Pricier than other hobs, induction hobs are taking the kitchen appliance world by storm thanks to their precision.

Cleaning your cooker

Induction and ceramic hobs are usually the easiest to clean as they have smooth surfaces. Induction hobs also shouldn’t need to be cleaned as often as it is for gas and electric hobs.

Most ovens have triple or quadruple-glazed glass doors which can be removed for easy and efficient cleaning so with the right tools and techniques, this can be effortless.

There are also models designed with automatic cleaning programs although these features are available on higher-spec models.

How to Avoid Buying Counterfeit Products

Working Macbook Computer Keyboard

Customers on Abanista.com enjoy total protection from counterfeit goods since all of our products are sourced from well established distributors in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

With more and more Ugandans now ordering goods on online shopping websites, where fast shipping, variety, and easy price comparisons offer lots of convenience. The following steps below will help keep you safe online.

How to Avoid a Fake?

  1. Check the identity of the seller.

woman holding two white and beige shopping paper bags in building

It’s usually best practice to buy electronic items, appliances, gadgets and branded ware from authorised retailers, licensed sellers and genuine brand outlets to eliminate the risk of counterfeit products. Many manufacturers of original products will supply information on who is selling their original products. Is the store you are buying from on the list of authorized dealers?

  2. Be wary of discounts.

man wearing pink polo shirt with text overlay

Ask yourself if there is a realistic price difference between the product you want to buy and the price of the product sold by the original manufacturer. If the price is too good to be true, it is most probably true. Even a small discount may be a red flag, since more counterfeiters are charging almost as much as the real thing in an effort to trick customers.

  3. Search other consumers’ reviews.

    lawyers looking at documents

Use Internet search tools to check whether other consumers have left any good or bad comments about the trader. Read these comments carefully, and keep a critical eye. Also look for reviews on the product you are purchasing.

  4. Pay attention to the packaging.

cardboard box on dark wooden table near tape and scissors

Check for flimsy packaging, Grammatical & spelling mistakes, Flawed fonts, logos, Omissions & mismatch. Brands generally put their logos on packaging, not just the products. Also look for certifications, use-by dates, and attached warranties, which should arrive with the product. If the product has been opened, is missing a certification or guarantee stamp, if there are no instructions included, do not proceed with purchase.

  5. Know the hallmarks of the real product.

    barcode cellphone close up coded

Before you make your purchase, get familiar with the product’s appearance, including the brand markings and any unique details. Check for spellings, In some cases, you can verify the serial number through the manufacturer’s website. This is common of many original brands today.
